Research with Quantified Cognition
Your everyday studying can contribute to research on how learning varies. Quantified Cognition turns Anki review history into daily estimates of memory formation and recall. Sharing those measurements can help us investigate how learning relates to sleep, activity and study patterns, and improve the methods used to measure it.

What your contribution helps us learn
Later Anki reviews provide information about how effectively you learned on an earlier day. Combined with sleep and activity measurements, they let us explore relationships with total sleep, deep and REM sleep, naps and everyday activity. The programme also examines how reliable these learning measures are and can develop new questions and methods within this research area.
We aim to share findings through scientific publications, reports and public summaries. The research uses observations from everyday life; associations alone do not establish cause and effect. Missing measurements, device errors and changes in study habits can affect the findings.
Taking part
When enrollment opens, adults aged 18 or over can contribute their own data. You can share existing history and contribute again when you have more data. There are no extra tests, scheduled visits or required changes to your routine. Participation is voluntary and unpaid. Your personal results and insights remain available whether you participate or not.
Each submission is a package of available daily Anki scores, review counts, uncertainty, follow-up information, sleep stages, nap and step summaries, and calculation and sharing metadata. You can contribute Anki data alone. The privacy policy describes the included fields in detail.
Card content, individual reviews and review pairs, exact sleep or review times, provider account IDs, credentials, your name and email are excluded from the package. You review each package and explicitly send it. Uploads are never automatic, and saying Yes in the initial sharing prompt sends nothing. We record the timing of sharing choices to understand whether seeing results affects participation.
How your contribution is used
JollyJoyJourney researchers use the data for this research programme. Approved academic, nonprofit or commercial collaborators may also receive controlled access under agreements governing use and protection of the data, subject to provider permission. Collaborators and their roles are identified before access. Public findings contain anonymous summaries or synthetic examples; individual daily histories are not published.
Measurements are linked using a pseudonym. Access is restricted, although unauthorized access or identification from patterns in daily histories remains a privacy risk.
Submitted measurements support ongoing research, method validation and checking findings. We regularly review the continuing need and delete or, where permitted, irreversibly anonymize records that are no longer needed. You can request deletion, and applicable legal or provider limits take precedence. The privacy policy explains how recovery copies and consent records are handled.
Your choice
You can decline, join later or withdraw without losing personal use. Once we receive a withdrawal, we stop research use of the affected records and arrange deletion, including controlled collaborator copies. Already published anonymous findings remain available. Use the add-on's deletion controls or contact us if you can no longer access them.
Before joining, you can read and save this information and the policy. The add-on checks eligibility and asks for explicit consent, signed using a pseudonym you choose. Consent records are kept separately from daily measurements, and you can save a copy. The consent statement is:
I confirm that I am at least 18 and am contributing my own data. I have read the research information and privacy policy. I explicitly consent to JollyJoyJourney processing my submitted daily learning, recall, sleep and activity measurements, including health-related data, for this research programme, with controlled access by approved research collaborators as described. I understand the retention criteria, that each upload requires my confirmation, and that I can withdraw without losing personal use.
The programme is operated by JollyJoyJourney, with Christian Kleineidam responsible for the research. For questions, contact contact@jollyjoyjourney.com.
